Three-phase asynchronous motors have always represented simplicity and are a high-quality low-cost choice for equipment such as material handling conveyors, rotating turntables or fans and other simple systems. Although the cost difference compared to similar-sized induction motors is less than it was 10 to 20 years ago, induction motors still have a place in some applications, and servo motors are not always a suitable alternative to asynchronous motors if you can justify the increased cost.
For example, if you need to maintain a constant speed under heavy loads, such as for applications greater than 30 or 40HP, an asynchronous motor may be a better choice. This is due to the high cost of the large number of permanent magnets required to produce such large motors, coupled with the fact that fast acceleration, high dynamic speed and precise positioning are not required for the application.
But the asynchronous motor will be larger and have greater inertia than the servo motor. Therefore, although they can be positioned with the correct feedback device, they are not the best choice for high-dynamic applications.
